Getting Started with Blender
Before we dive into the world of sculpting, let’s get familiar with the basics of Blender. If you’re new to Blender, the interface can be overwhelming at first, but don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you.
Understanding the Viewport
The viewport is the window where you’ll be working on your 3D project. It’s where you’ll see your sculpture take shape. To move around the viewport, you can use the following shortcuts:
Shortcut | Action |
---|---|
Middle mouse click | Orbit (hold to rotate) |
Shift + Middle mouse click | Pan (hold to move) |
Scroll up and down | Zoom |
You can also use the gizmos in the top corner of the viewport to navigate. If you get lost, don’t worry, you can always jump to an object by selecting it in the outliner (the list on the right side of the screen) and selecting “View”> “Frame Selected”.

Transforming Objects
Now that you know how to move around the viewport, let’s learn how to move and transform objects. This is where the magic happens!
Moving, Scaling, and Rotating Objects
To move an object, simply click on it and use the following shortcuts:
Shortcut | Action |
---|---|
G | Move (grab) |
S | Scale |
R | Rotate |
If you want to restrict the movement to a specific axis, you can hit R, S, or G, and then type the axis you want to use (e.g., X, Y, or Z). For example, if you want to rotate an object around the Z axis, you would hit R, then Z, and then move your mouse around.
Adding Shapes
Now that you know how to transform objects, let’s add some shapes to work with. In this tutorial, we’ll use metaballs to create a basic form to sculpt.
Creating Metaballs
To add a shape, click the “Add” menu in the top left corner and select “Metaball”. You can then scale and move it to the desired position.
Duplicating and Merging Metaballs
To duplicate a metaball, click on it and hit Shift + D. You can then move the duplicate around and merge it with the original metaball by clicking on the outer ring. Keep adding metaballs until you get a rough shape you’d like to start with.
Converting to Mesh
Once you’re happy with your metaball shape, right-click on it and select “Convert to Mesh”. This will make the metaballs non-interactive, so make sure they’re in the right place!
Sculpting
The moment you’ve been waiting for – sculpting! In the top right corner of the viewport, you’ll see a tab called “Sculpting”. Click on it to enter sculpting mode.
Enabling Dyntopo and Symmetry
In the sculpting tab, you’ll see a tiny checkbox called “Dyntopo”. Click on it to enable dynamic topology, which allows you to sculpt and edit your mesh in real-time. You can also enable symmetry by clicking on the checkbox next to it.
Choosing Brushes
On the left side of the screen, you’ll see a list of brushes. Each brush has a unique effect on your mesh. You can test them out and see which one you like best. We recommend starting with the “Snake Hook” brush – it’s great for creating organic shapes.
Changing Brush Size
To change the size of your brush, hit F. You can also adjust the brush settings on the right side of the screen. Zoom in for more detail, and zoom out for less.
Practicing and Experimenting
Now it’s time to practice and experiment with your new sculpting skills! Try out each brush, watch tutorials, and stay inspired. Remember, sculpting is all about experimentation and having fun.
Tips and Tricks
- Use reference images to help you learn and improve your sculpting skills.
- Experiment with different brushes and techniques to achieve unique effects.
- Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – they can often lead to new and interesting ideas!
By following these steps and practicing regularly, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a Blender sculpting master. Happy sculpting!
